Another Scorsese Classic…
I have now seen Raging Bull, easily the best in the Scorsese-De Niro partnership (although I’m watching Taxi Driver soon) and also the best in the De Niro-Pesci partnership, they both excel in the movie, giving Pesci’s non-existent career a huge boost. The best way to sum the film up, critically, in a metaphor is that it’s rather like a cross pendant that’s rough around the edges in a good way, but polished in the middle. I use the cross as an example because underneath all the violence and swearing there’s an underlying innocence that follows throughout the film, sort of like they’re not sinning, they’re just ill informed/too stupid to work it out for theirselves. By they I refer to Jake and Joey, the two main characters, Jake being the protagonist/antihero. Without getting too much into the story, which is based on true events in, still surviving.
