The Real Beale

Making a film is essentially about two things: belief and momentum.

The List

with one comment

Ah, what film website would be complete without a List? Well, here’s mine. And if you disagree with any of the positions, and it’s guaranteed you will, leave a comment. Enjoy! :D

1. Synecdoche, New York: Better than the best.

2. The Godfather: Simply the best, here are some of the things it is best at: the best music, some of the best directing, some of the best acting, the best cinematography – a masterpiece by Coppola in every way that almost never happened many times. In depth, multiple genre exploration into the world of the Italian-American mafia.

99.7%

3. Brazil: There’s weird, then there’s weirder, and then there’s Brazil. Terry Gilliam immerses us into his mind and the result is a cross between Blade Runner and 1984. Reminds us what the medium of film is really for. Wonderfully weird, Brazil’s gripping clutch never let’s go, not even at the most confusing of times. Not everyone will like it, but Jonathan Pryce, Ian Holm, Robert De Niro and Bob Hoskins fantastic performances in the well written script of this comedy, drama, fantasy, romantic sci-fi make it somewhat comprehendable…somehow. And yet it’s strangely not Gilliam’s weirdest work!!

99.4%

4. The Shawshank Redemption: Beautifully crafted film with one of the best scripts around. Has so much to offer including a universal message of hope. Uplifting, brilliant film with some fantastic acting which placed Morgan Freeman as “The Narrator” in many more films to come. Inspiring.

98.8%

5. The Godfather Part II: When someone asks me ” Which is better, Godfather 1 or Godfather 2?” I feel like my mind is going to explode. The Godfather Part II may be the best film in the trilogy, but The Godfather is a better, more land marking film. Still, this is one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever with a more isolated approach to the Corleone family, as Michael become alienated and we see how Vito Andolini earned his bread.

98.7%

6. Schindler’s List: Moving true story abour a Nazi businessman who saves hundreds of Jews from slave camps by taking them on in his factory. Ralph Fiennes is chilling as Amon Goeth, but it’s Liam Neeson who really shines here. By the end, you’re reduced to tears. This film takes you on a journey through almost every emotion imaginable. Spielberg has never made a more elegant, but gritty and grim film. Kubrick had been making his Hollocaust movie, Aryan papers, for over 2 years in pre production; then he heard Spielberg was making one and stopped the entire project. That’s how good it is.

98.3%

7. Goodfellas: The story of the bad guys. Brilliantly crafted masterpiece from Martin Scorsese based on a book based on the true story of Henry Hill’s life in the mob. Joe Pesci is shocking as maniac Tommy DeVito as we watch whacks, drugs and tomato sauce with too much onions string together a fantastically original gangster movie unlike anything before it.

98.0%

8. Apocalypse Now: The film which was hell to make, but heaven to watch. An incredible, drug-like experience as you follow Captain  Willard (Martin Sheen) on a mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Poetic, catastrophic journey set in the Vietnam war which is both dark and disturbing to watch.

97.5%

9. Raging Bull: Robert De Niro (who gained 60 pounds for the movie) leads this film as real life boxer Jake LaMotta, also known as the Bronx Bull. Scorsese shows what he can do here with De Niro and Pesci make this a film you’ll never forget. Arguably Scorsese’s finest piece. Both brutal and honest.

97.4%

10. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: The epic trilogy culminates in a modern classic as good as it is long. Not many directors could’ve taken on the challenge of directing The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I’m sure Peter Jackson was the best to do it and it’ll take some beating for another epic to knock this of 9th place. Classic medieval fantasy with too many actors to mention in the short space I have here to summarise it, lest to say it stuns.

Some Random Facts:

There are 1,720 words in The List.

The average percentage is 80%.

The total percentage is 32,067.7%.

7/8 of the films in the Top Ten are by America born directors (Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, [Terry Gilliam] see below).

The highest film by a British director is Vertigo (13). This is unless you count Brazil by Terry Gilliam, who at the time was American, but is now British.

The highest “Romance” film is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (50).

There are 4 Animated films in the top 100 (Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Wall.E, Princess Mononoke)

There are 8 Steven Spielberg films in the top 100 (Schindler’s List, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Saving Private Ryan, Duel, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind).

There are 5 Australian films in the top 100 (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Shine, Chopper).

I’ve scrapped the old marking system in favour of the simple percentage process. I’ll still be using the system to estimate the percentages, but you won’t see it in any posts/reviews from now onwards.

0%= High School Musical 2

10%= to this film, even Indy IV looks good

20%= will make you on the verge of gouging your eyes out with a spoon

30%= shockingly mediocre

40%= hey, it could be worse, but not that much worse, not nearly good enough

50%= well, at least half of the film is good, but it’s mostly juts cheap thrills or a poor drama

60%= actually not that bad, it has it’s moments, it could be improved, but worth a watch

70%= excels in one or two areas, shame it’s let down by just a few things off the mark, but still, a good film

80%= excellent in many ways, let down by minor niggles that annoy just enough to point them out after watching, definitely worth a watch though

90= mind blowingly stunning, this film is fantastic, one of the best of it’s kind or it’s created it’s own genre, you’ll love it and remember it forever

100%= man has finally achieved perfection: we all drive in hover cars, take holidays to the moon and slurp our liquid McDonalds, but there’s still one all defining, all knowing perfect movie. If you ever see this on my blog, I advise you to pack only important necessities only, buy a tent, take out all your money from the bank and camp outside the cinema where you will watch this over and over and over again while millions of others flock to see Saw 243: Rise of the Coca Cola Vending Machine. And that’s the way the coocoo film industry works.
